Come out to celebrate the Afro-Venezuelan tradition of San Juan in a walking procession—dancing and singing to the beat of drums. The Afro-Venezuelan tradition of San Juan was originally a slave celebration in the cocoa and coffee plantations in the Caribbean coasts of Venezuela, and later adopted and syncretized by the Catholic church. It has been celebrated in Venezuela for hundreds of years and celebrates the summer solstice as well as the birth of Saint John the Baptist.

San Juan in New York City is a celebration of this multicultural tradition and is hosted by the group Tambor y Caña, a traditional Afro-Venezuelan music project with an experimental approach founded in May 2017 in Brooklyn, NY by Willie Quintana with Daniel Prim, Jeickov Vital, Juan Diego Villalobos, and Kevin Costante. Tambor y Caña promotes and disseminates drums, dance, songs, and Afro-Venezuelan culture.
