David Dorfman Dance's truce songs is a wild and personal meditation on peace with self, others, and the world. Employing the company’s trademark style of merging highly athletic dancing with poignant emotion, this abstract work of movement art is devised dance-theater for all audiences. Dancing bodies serve as conduits for momentary peace as the company mines the depths of power-crazed existence looking for foibles and laughter, perhaps our most powerful tool of all. truce songs features visuals by Andrew Schneider, costumes by Naoko Nagata, and live music by Lizzy de Lise and Sam Crawford.

Artist Biographies
David Dorfman Dance For almost 40 years, David Dorfman Dance (DDD) has created movement that seeks to de-stigmatize the notion of accessibility and interaction in post-modern dance by embracing audiences with visceral, meaningful dance, music and text. By sustaining a vision to create innovative, inclusive, performance that is radically humanistic, DDD maintains a core commitment to examine and unearth issues and ideas that enliven, incite, and excite audiences in dialogue about social change and a myriad of other topics. Dorfman’s mission is “to get the whole world dancing.” DDD has performed widely from Europe to Central Asia, Turkey to El Salvador and at major NYC venues including BAM, The Joyce,The Kitchen, Danspace Project, La MaMa, NYU Skirball, The Duke on 42nd Street, The Met Breuer and 92NY//Harkness Dance Festival. David, the company’s dancers, and artistic collaborators have been honored with eight NY Dance and Performance (Bessie) Awards. This is DDD’s fourth time at Lincoln Center: a mixed repertory program at the fountain; underground; and Prophets of Funk (to the music of Sly and The Family Stone), both at Damrosch Park.
David Dorfman (Choreographer and Dance Activist) (he/him), has been making movement-based dance theater since graduating with an MFA in Dance from Connecticut College in 1981. In 1987, he founded David Dorfman Dance in NYC with the intention of creating politically and socially relevant work. A life-long educator, David has been a professor at Connecticut College since 2004, where DDD is Company-in-Residence. David choreographed Broadway's “Indecent,” for which he was given a Lortel for its Off-Broadway run, and has also received a 2019 USA Fellowship in Dance, a Guggenheim, 4 NEA fellowships and a Bessie. DD’s early performing years were happily spent with Kei Takei’s Moving Earth and Susan Marshall & Co. In his copious spare time, he has co-created and toured internationally a body of tragi-comic physical theater with dear friend Dan Froot, entitled “Live Sax Acts”— and he continues to dance profusely with wife Lisa Race and son Samson Race Dorfman. He is thrilled to return to action at Lincoln Center.

Program Notes
A note from David:
A truce is loosely defined as an agreement to pause a dispute for a moment.
Maybe two? Longer? Forever? Throughout the multi-year process of creating our dance, the slipperiness of truce has revealed itself. truce, as a concept, should serve as a beacon of hope, but does it any longer? In trying to answer this question, we decided to make some dances and songs about it. In fact, I think this is our truce. When was the last time you made one? Was it with yourself? Another?
I have a proposal - let’s be compassionately tactile with our skin and fervently elastic with our minds.
Welcome - glad you are here.
- DD
