Since the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in 2020, many orchestras have made it a priority to program and commission works by African American composers, but Black participation in orchestral music extends farther back into the 19th Century. Join us for a discussion with panelists Judith Insell, violist and Executive Director of The Bronx Arts Ensemble, composer Nkeiru Okoye, and moderator Fredara Mareva Hadley as they explore the history of African American orchestral composers, the current orchestral programming landscape, and express their hope for the future of American orchestral music and African American composers’ place within it.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, there will no longer be ASL interpretation during this event.

Leading up to the Freedom is a Constant Struggle performance in Damrosch Park on July 5, you're invited to a series of three panels where artists, activists, and historians in conversation with cultural colleagues bring the inspiration behind the performance into focus. Join us for this conversation at Lincoln Center's David Rubenstein Atrium on June 25 and on June 24 at 12:00 pm for Classical Music and the Quest for Liberation. The panel series culminates on June 28 at 7:30 pm at the Harlem Stage Gatehouse with History and Cultural Identity as Inspiration, a conversation with the composer Tamar-kali and cultural colleagues Melissa Cooper PhD, John Goff, and Sheldon Scott. The performance and the panels are free.
