Franz Joseph Haydn Symphony No. 100, “Military”

From intimate dialogue to orchestral fireworks, enjoy an evening of vibrance, personality, and dazzling virtuosity in this program that spans three centuries. Bask in Adolphus Hailstork’s reverent Sonata da Chiesa, which draws on tradition while speaking in his distinctly modern voice. Richard Strauss’s charming Duett-Concertino follows, featuring soloists from the orchestra—Principal clarinetist Jon Manasse and Principal bassoonist Marc Goldberg— in a playful musical dialogue. Ethel Smyth’s Symphony for Small Orchestra reveals the sweeping imagination and dramatic flair of a composer whose music is enjoying a well-deserved resurgence. The program concludes with Haydn’s Symphony No. 100, the “Military,” a crowd-pleasing tour de force famous for its celebratory fanfares, bold percussion, and jubilant spirit—bringing the evening to a thrilling close.
