A new transnational ensemble led by acclaimed Korean gayageum virtuoso DoYeon Kim brings together an extraordinary grouping of improvisers for a world premiere performance at the David Rubenstein Atrium. She is joined by bassist John Hébert and drummer Satoshi Takeshi-two deeply responsive and attuned collaborators to DoYeon’s compositional language and improvisational style. Kim bridges Korean traditional music, contemporary jazz structural elements, and open-form improvisation. The ensemble will also feature special guest Ingrid Laubrock, a Brooklyn-based saxophonist and composer originally from Germany whose work explores the boundaries between musical genres, creating multilayered and richly textured sound worlds. Described by The New Yorker as a “fully committed saxophonist and visionary,” Laubrock is internationally recognized for her innovative approach to improvisation and composition.

At the core of this project is new music composed by Kim specifically for Jazztopad NYC. Within these pieces, sections of open improvisation will allow the ensemble to move fluidly between written material and spontaneous creation, highlighting the voice of each performer while emphasizing a shared ethos built on listening and risk-taking.

The premiere will take place on June 20 at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center as part of the tenth Jazztopad NYC festival, a series known for fostering adventurous, globally minded collaborations.

Presented in collaboration with the National Forum of Music in Wroclaw in partnership with the Polish Cultural Institute New York, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.

Over the past twenty years, the Jazztopad Festival, distinguished by its embrace of traditional sounds from distant parts of the world not necessarily associated with jazz, has commissioned new work from renowned artists from the US and Europe. Henning Bolte of Jazzhalo wrote: “Jazztopad Festival making it possible to experience internationally highly profiled musicians in a variety of situations (concert hall, club, private homes, combinations of it, also informal ones). All appearances of chosen musicians and music always felt as a very typical Jazztopad one and are remembered with a strong trace in one’s memory.”

The American edition of Jazztopad is, above all, an opportunity to meet the most important musicians of the Polish contemporary jazz scene, a recognizable brand that presents work of the highest caliber. “A model for what a jazz festival can be, Jazztopad is fertile soil for commissioned works and adventure-minded programming,” says Josef Woodard of DownBeat.
