For the past 20 years, the Jazztopad Festival has offered a rare opportunity to hear important and innovative artists on the Polish contemporary jazz scene. Inspired by traditional songs from Poland, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine, the Polish trio SUTARInova is the most recent iteration of Sutari, the emotive musical collective fueled by vocal harmonies and Central European folk instrumentation. Sutari's music has traditionally focused on trance-like polyphonic compositions driven by plucked and bowed strings and frame drums, revolving around concepts of nature, freedom, femininity and sisterhood. As SUTARInova, the group continues to showcase those themes but now embraces the freshness of improvisation and the modernity of electronic sounds, centering new work around relentless repetition and more opaque narrative. The group's current lineup features founding members Basia Songin (vocals, percussion, violin) and Kasia Kapela (vocals, percussion, bass) with Filip Zakrzewski on electronics. For the June 18 performance, the band will be joined by the versatile NYC-based producer and musician Shahzad Ismaily on guitar and double bass.

Presented by the National Forum of Music in Wrocłlaw in partnership with the Polish Cultural Institute New York, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, and the Japan Foundation.
