The Unsound Festival, curated by Artistic Director Mat Schulz, challenges traditional presumptions of contemporary composition with unique staging, unlikely instrumentation, and passionate presentation. This one-night-only Unsound program at the David Rubenstein Atrium unites America and Poland through modern musical traditions for a rhythmically wild concert showcasing the beauty and energy of footwork. The heavily syncopated, high-velocity sound of footwork fuses Chicago house, Hip-Hop, R&B, and drum and bass into energetically unstoppable dance music. Electronic producer and musical innovator RP Boo's 1997 track "Baby Come On" is regarded as the genesis of the genre and he remains one of footwork's most respected DJs. Footwork's impact reaches all the way to Poland, where Łódź-based drummer Gary Gwadera has reimagined its uniquely American sound through the prism of Polish folk traditions on his album Far, far in Chicago. Tonight they perform together live in a new Unsound-commissioned work.

To open the night, another new collaboration connecting Poland and the U.S. sees Poznań percussionist and experimental musician Adam Gołębiewski join forces with San Francisco sound artist and instrument-maker Evicshen (aka Victoria Shen), who performs with acrylic nails embedded with turntable styluses.

Unsound is co-organized and co-presented by Fundacja Tone – Muzyka i Nowe Formy Sztuki and the Polish Cultural Institute New York. This project is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland from the Culture Promotion Fund in partnership with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. The main partner of Unsound Web KRK – NYC is the Polish National Foundation.
