The Sounds of San Juan Hill series reconsiders the culture and heritage of New York's lost neighborhood of San Juan Hill, once part of the Lincoln Square area. The 50 year old Mabou Mines Theater Company has had ample experience adapting to New York's shifting landscape, making it an appropriate setting for a talk on topics of preservation, gentrification, activism, and displacement. Moderator Gary Padmore, the NY Phil's Vice President of Education and Community Engagement, oversees this off-site discussion at Mabou's beautiful outdoor space. Panelists include artist and Mabou co-Artistic Director Carl Hancock Rux, historian Julia Foulkes, and Etienne Charles, the performer and composer whose Lincoln Center-commissioned work inspired by the San Juan Hill story reopens David Geffen Hall.
