To close its 2026-27 season-long “Celebrate Beethoven” series, the American Classical Orchestra presents two of the composer’s iconic works, the Fifth Symphony, Op. 67 and the Violin Concerto, Op. 61.

From its stunning four-note first movement opening through the glorious turn to major in the finale, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony continues to amaze and captivate listeners. Beethoven’s earliest sketches date from 1804, but it took nearly four years to complete, during which time he wrote several other works including the three Op. 59 Razumovsky String Quartets, and his Op. 61 Violin Concerto which concludes this performance. The Fifth Symphony was premiered on the same concert as the Sixth (Pastoral).

Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, Op. 61 (1806) was not immediately considered a great work and lay forgotten for nearly forty years, until a twelve-year-old prodigy named Joseph Joachim brought it back to life under Mendelssohn's baton. Along with the Fifth Symphony, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is considered a cornerstone of the classical repertoire.

Joining the ACO at Alice Tully Hall is virtuoso violinist Shunske Sato, former artistic leader of the Netherlands Bach Society, longtime collaborator with, and faculty at the Amsterdam Conservatory. New York audiences may know him from his guest director projects with Juilliard415 and Concerto Köln. Sato performs with period ensembles and symphony orchestras worldwide, and is a leading voice in historically informed performance today.
