In the candlelit Kaplan Penthouse, pianist Kirill Gerstein conjures the fantastical colors and impassioned poetry of Brahms’s Second Piano Sonata, which the 19-year-old composer dedicated to Clara Schumann, one of the top piano virtuosos of her day. Also a talented composer, Clara’s dramatic Variations on a Theme by R. Schumann adds a fascinating dimension to this late-night recital.
