Singer with raised arm and mouth open in song performs with pipa player in background.

Qian Yi, one of the leading performers of the Kunju style of Chinese opera, sings an excerpt from “Paradise Interrupted,” a contemporary opera by acclaimed composer Huang Ruo (Dr. Sun Yat-sen) that intertwines traditional Chinese and contemporary Western idioms. This performance was recorded at the Manhattan studio of Jennifer Wen Ma, who directed and designed the production. Zhou Yi accompanies on pipa. The opera was performed in July 2016 as part of the Lincoln Center Festival.
