In a program of chamber music at its most intimate, three musicians who are fast friends and frequent collaborators perform works long held close to their hearts. Brahms’ first Cello Sonata, among the cello’s most popular works, is paired with Dvořák’s incomparably American-spirited Violin Sonatina, composed in Spillville, Iowa. A deeply personal work, Mendelssohn’s Second Piano Trio integrates Jewish-inflected folk dance with Christian hymn, in a masterpiece capped by one of chamber music’s most stirring conclusions.
