Boro-Linc Manhattan: Community Artist Residency with Cozbi Cabrera

  • Show & Tell

Lincoln Center seeks to build collaborative partnerships with local artists to support the incredible work being done in NYC’s borough communities, as well as to increase access to audiences, opportunities, and professional resources. The Boro-Linc Community Artist Residency Program offers local artists the opportunity to create, promote, and lead a semester-long workshop series that connects their practice to the issues relevant to the area and culminates in an art event in one of Boro-Linc’s Community Partner neighborhoods. Additionally, this program will task artists with connecting their practice to Lincoln Center programming to conduct pre-performance art-making workshops as part of the 2016–17 Boro-Linc season.

This residency will involve a series of quilting sessions, each one working with a square to add to our communal quilt that will be displayed at our culminating event. Participants can take their quilt squares home to work on in more detail between sessions, if need be. To approach the notion of identity we will start with the idea of origin. Where do we come from? Who came before us? While some of these questions can be answered through biological inheritance/tracking, for some, particularly those with broken biological links, a figure of influence can be found through a social connection. For many, this sort of probing will stir stories of immigration, cultural shifts, and adaptations.
