One of the hottest dance nights this month is Midsummer Night Swing's The Sound of Philadelphia: A DISCO Party! on Thursday, June 28. Join Joe McGinty & The Loser's Lounge for this celebration of the solid gold hits of the 1970s Philadelphia disco scene. In the meantime, start brushing up your hustle with this playlist, curated by McGinty, before you show off your skills on the dance floor.

Joe McGinty: As someone from the suburbs of Philly (South Jersey), Philly soul has always had a special place in my heart. I was lucky enough to do one session at the legendary Sigma Sound Studios with Philly rocker Robert Hazard. It was a thrill to be there, where so many great records were made. Gold records lined the wall by great acts like The Spinners, The O'Jays, The Stylistics, and The Delfonics. Gamble & Huff and Thom Bell had an incredible streak of hit records, combining the soulful grooves of Motown with the sophisticated arrangements of Burt Bacharach. The Philly reputation was such that Elton John, David Bowie, Dusty Springfield, the Jacksons, and many others made their way there to work at Sigma. The "Philly Sound" is a rare combination of sophistication, groove, and melody (and incredibly catchy hit songs). These songs were all over the radio when I was growing up, and they still resonate with me today.
